I'm not of the opinion that expressing political opinions online is unnecessary or useless. In a world of diminishing democracies with a raging epidemic of misinformation and hate online that can spontaneously trigger riots and slowly and steadily engineer genocides, to shut up and lean back is a luxury that is affordable to the ones who feel that they do not stand to lose.
In a society that has shifted overwhelmingly to the right end of the political spectrum, organized hate and misinformation originating from right wing quarters easily find space in the mainstream media and even family WhatsApp groups.
During the Anti-CAA protest, Anti-muslim hate speeches peaked and fact checking sites had a tough time keeping up with all the misinformation peddled online, most of which found its origins at the ruling party's IT cell. That pattern largely remains the same today.
